The reduction and recycling of waste from a painting process in automobile manufacturing
1. Objectives
- The waste from the painting process in the automobile manufacturing is sludge. In recent years the cost to dispose of sludge has risen suddenly. The reduction and recycling of sludge would lower the cost.
2. Description
- A spray gun to paint car bodies is changed for a low-pressure type and it scatters less paint. This reduces the amount of dregs.
- The sludge is recycled as a component material of asphalt sheets (vibration-proof material) which is used for the chassis of the car. The automobile manufacturer and an asphalt sheet maker agreed that the sludge should be used as the material on condition that the former pulverized the sludge so that the grain size of it should be not larger than 200 mesh.

3. Effects
- The amount of paint used for a car is reduced by 17% and it results in resource conservation.
- The amount of the scattered paint is also reduced by about 17% and it reduces dregs.
- All sludge is recycled as the material of asphalt sheets.
