Bio-Pop, S System1. System Outline
Bio-pop, S is a wastewater treatment system employing bio-film filtration technology. Wastewater and air are fed to the lower part of aeration tank and flow upward. The organic matter in water is removed by activated sludge film on filtering packing in the upper part of the tank. The packing is lightweight, porous plastic media of 5-20mm in diameter. The packing also filtrates suspended solids (SS) in the water, therefore the treated water contains less solids and the system requires no clarifier. The packing is back-washed once or twice a day by air-agitation and excess sludge is discharged from the tank. Backwash can be carried out automatically
2.Performances
Performances of actual systems are as follows:
1) COD(Mn) in Raw water/Treated water: 220/50(mg/l),
Flow rate: 9,600m3/d
COD(Mn) Load to packing: 10kg-COD/m3-d.
2) COD(Mn)in Raw water/Treated water: 65/40(mg/l)
Flow rate: 72,000m3/d
COD(Mn) Load to packing: 7kg-COD/m3-d.
The systems of above two performances are paper mill wastewater treatment systems with no clarifier.
3. Advantages and Application
- 1) Advantages
- - Organic matter in wastewater can be removed in short time without clarifier, therefore space requirement is small.
- Oxygen utilization rate is high because of long retention time of air through the packing; therefore the power consumption for aeration blower is small.
- Packing can be back-washed effectively, therefore there is no trouble of over sticking of activated sludge on the packing and also anaerobic zone can't be formed in aeration tank.

2) Application
The system is well applied to wastewater treatment for large volume and middle concentration of organic such as paper mill industry.
